The person will work across the Hospital School, mainly supporting our pupils at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Teaching will be at the bedside or in small groups. As a Hospital School, we are classed as a community special school because all of our young people have ill health; physical or mental or both. The ability profile of learners is wide, with the vast majority broadly in line with learners in mainstream settings. However, we do also have some PMLD learners and those with special needs, which means their “home” school is within the specialist sector. Due to the nature of the role, the individual will also be able to confidently teach mainstream students depending on the needs of the students.
You will have a passion for the processes of learning and teaching, and you will be eager to continually develop your own skills. You will provide engaging and stimulating learning environments where all pupils are treated as individuals. You will have experience of working with children with additional needs and you will be a skilled PMLDs practitioner. You will have the ability to work flexibly with a range of pupils and you will be able to manage your own workload effectively. You will work collaboratively with all our staff and parents in order to support pupil wellbeing. You will play a key role in ensuring that the school meets the needs of its students at RMCH with EHCPs. This may involve leading on all aspects of the plan, do review process for students, supporting requests for statutory assessments, leading review meetings and providing updated educational advice.
Because of the unique nature of our school we encourage applications from teachers working in a Secondary or Special School setting: either of these would be a relevant professional background. However, staff need to be able to plan for SEND learners and plan bespoke timetables for individual pupils across all sites. This is why we offer SEND 1 point as part of the remuneration package.
It’s important that you bring a flexible and practically-minded approach to your work. It’s likely that you will work across more than one of our sites in any given week and you can expect to teach in a range of settings e.g. working with groups or on a one-to-one basis. Most roles are anticipated to be full-time appointments, but we will consider part-time arrangements for the best candidates.
We follow the values in the ethical leadership framework at Manchester Hospital School.

We follow safer recruitment procedures and all posts will be subject to enhanced DBS checks, satisfactory references and will be exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
These posts are also subject to satisfactory references, proof of right to work in the UK in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 and other pre-employment checks where applicable.
We are an Equal Opportunities Employer and we positively welcome applications from all candidates regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.
